How I styled our Entry Cabinet

Date

I just shared how we transformed the Ikea Hemnes shoe cabinet into a custom built in for the small area inside our garage door. It’s what we use a command center and we wanted it to feel like it was part of the house! You can see how we transformed it and PAINTED it here!

In real life, the top of the cabinet always ended up being a catch all and had a tendency to overflow with random things that needed to be put away, were waiting to go to the car, or we were trying to keep out of reach from the dogs. With the elevated look of the cabinet I wanted to make sure we could keep the top clean and styled without sacrificing storage!

Almost all of these pieces are thrifted including the knobs on the cabinet! They were originally a really shiny gold color but were not metal, so when I tried to clean them up, the finish just washed away. I gave them a few coats of gold spray paint and they look brand new and coordinate well with our kitchen cabinetry!

I made sure to include a few pieces where we could stash small items like keys or a rogue Lego. I found this beautiful brass coin dish at Goodwill and polished it up with Bar Keeper’s Friend. This silver plated lotus bowl came from a flea market, and while I could shine up the silver, I actually really love the patina!

I balanced out the vintage pieces with a modern white planter. This fishbone cactus is one of my very favorite plants! (just don’t tell the others!) This modern black frame is my go-to style. I love the wide mat. I added a black and white floral print and I’m sharing it with you! Just head to the bottom of this post for a FREE download!

The frame actually conceals our thermostat, but because it’s propped at an angle, air can flow and we haven’t noticed any issue with the temperature regulation in our home.

A small ornate mirror (also thrifted!) looks so cute hung with this still life art print I found here. I love how they balance so well with the large black frame.

In my next post, I’ll be sharing how we use the inside of the cabinet to best suit the needs of our family! Hint, there are no shoes in this shoe cabinet! Stay tuned!
