How To Make your Baseboards Bigger Without Replacing Them

Date

We are in the throes of a primary bathroom makeover and our main goal is to make this small space FEEL larger! One way to achieve this is with taller baseboards to help give the illusion of a larger space, but did you know there’s a trick to make your original baseboards look bigger without ripping them out and replacing them?! Did I just blow your mind???

Why are tall baseboards important?

Adding any type of trim or wall treatment to a space helps to add depth and dimension, which makes a room feel more luxe and BIGGER. Taller baseboards, in particular, help to draw the eye upward giving the illusion of a taller space.

How Can I Make My Baseboards Bigger without Replacing them?

By adding another piece of trim or moulding above your original baseboard and painting both pieces along with the wall between them all the same color, you create the illusion of a larger baseboard!

We chose this trim to add to the wall above our small baseboards while leaving a 3 inch gap between the 2 trims. You can go as thin or thick as you like with your extra trim – just make sure it coordinates well.

After first painting the new trim the color Retreat, we tacked it up using our brad nailer and a level.

We then patched the nail holes, sanded, and painted both trims and the wall between Retreat. It looks like one tall piece that helps the room feel larger!

Try this trick anywhere in your home or even around your door and window casings to give the illusion of a larger space without demo!
