In honor of this next stage, I wanted to “grow up” his bedroom to make it as cozy and fun for him as possible! This room wasn’t a complete overhaul because we had already painted his walls a gorgeous color (Martha Stewart Blue Fir) a few years ago and added chair rail.

Recently, we were gifted an antique bedframe from our sweet neighbors that is a similar style to the one in my inspo picture. I had been dragging my feet on purchasing the Jenny Lind bedframe in my inspo photo because it is way out of budget, BUT the one gifted to us gave me that style vibe and was free!

Much like past projects, such as my bench makeover, I first cleaned the bedframe with Krud Kutter to remove any residue or buildup before painting. I used my favorite spray paint, Rust-oleum Painter’s Touch in Flat Black and applied several light coats to each side, making sure to avoid runs and drips.

I didn’t realize how much painting the wood black would make it look so much more like my dream headboard! I do wish it was a little taller so you could see more of the turned posts, but overall, it was such a great addition to his room!

J’s nightstand has been used in many spaces in our home and was showing major wear and tear. I knew I wanted to add a pop of color in his bedroom and this nightstand was the perfect opportunity! I gave it a few coats of the most gorgeous mustard yellow paint perfectly named, Back To School, by Behr. I used Behr Marquee paint in Matte finish to make sure it was durable. These paint brushes are the best I have found and give a nice smooth finish! I spray painted the knobs flat black and it’s like a brand new night stand!

If you have seen other parts of my home, you know I love a good gallery wall. I love to mix the old and new, especially when I can mix in family heirloom pieces! For Jackson’s walls, I curated a collection of family antiques such as a few of my grandfather’s old license plates and the map of Europe my grandparents used when they traveled there.

A few prints from Etsy that were originally purchased for Jackson’s nursery add a playful touch without feeling too baby-ish. One of my favorite pieces in this room is the framed birch tree wallpaper. That is the wallpaper we hung in Jackson’s nursery in our former home. By framing a wallpaper remnant I not only created a free piece of art, but it honors his babyhood and a place where we made countless memories. (am I the only one crying?)

Aside from the bedding, not much is brand new in this room. A lot of the key pieces started out in other parts of our home and now work so well together in this space! The doctor’s trunk at the foot of the bed was an antique my dad bought. The dresser was mine growing up! The mirror/coat rack is a family antique from my husband’s family that we refinished a few years ago. It works so well in this room! And the wool rug was originally purchased for our first living room.

I think what makes J’s bedroom so special and cozy is that it is filled with history – family stories, sweet memories, and pieces that once belonged to passed loved ones. I can feel the warmth and love of our families in this space, and I hope Jackson can feel that too as he grows up and learns more about his family.
