I love decorating for Valentine’s Day, but my décor is up for such a short amount of time that I don’t love to spend a lot of money. So I came up with 3 very easy and affordable Valentine’s DIYs to share with you!

DIY Yarn Hearts
Aren’t these yarn hearts darling? I made something similar for Christmas, which you can find here. You can use these as a vase filler, layer them on a tray with candles, or string them as garland. And the best part is that they’re so easy and inexpensive to make!
Materials
- yarn in your desired colors, I chose this and this yarn
- clear tape or hot glue
- thin cardboard, such as a cereal box
- scissors
How To Make It
1. Cut out hearts in any style or size you want out of your cardboard.
2. Secure the end of your yarn to the back of the heart with either tape or a dot of hot glue.
3. Wrap the yarn around the carboard heart in all directions, being careful to keep your wrappings secure. For the first couple rounds, the yarn will want to move around until it has more yarn to grip onto.
4. When the entire heart is covered, cut the yarn and secure to the back of the heart, again with a small piece of tape or hot glue.
To use as garland, take one long piece of yarn and lay it out on a large flat surface. Space out your yarn hearts and securely attach each onto the piece of yarn.
DIY XOXO Art
The great part of this DIY, is you don’t even need to buy a new frame! Just frame your Valentine art using an existing frame in your home and then swap the art back out after the holiday!
Materials
- white cardstock
- black paint
- paint brush
- picture frame
How To Make It
1. Decide what size frame you want to use. I found these adorable white and gold frames at Home Goods and couldn’t resist!! I’ll just change the art later. I also used a regular frame matted for an 8×10 picture.
2. Once you know what frame you want to use, trim down your paper to fit the frame.
3. Taking a little black paint on your brush, make X’s and O’s. For a painterly effect, dab your brush a few times to remove a bit of the paint so you can see the brush strokes on your paper. I also wrote out the word “love” in cursive.
4. Once your paint is dry, simply frame and display!
DIY Heart Art
This one is near and dear to my heart (hah!) because this is the first art Jackson ever made as a baby. Now that he is 5, we tried a different method, but both are beautiful!
Finger Painting Style Materials
- zippered plastic bag
- cardstock
- paints
- scissors
1. Place a piece of cardstock inside your zippered plastic bag.
2. Carefully place large dots of paint all over the paper and seal the bag.
3. Allow your child (even infant!) to move and squish the paint around. Finger painting without the mess!
4. When they are finished, carefully remove the paper and let it dry.
5. Cut out a large heart and frame. I bring out the heart that Jackson made every year. With an older child, you can allow them to finger paint without the bag or let them use paint brushes. Whatever you want!
Note – you don’t have to have a child to do this one! Grab some colorful paints, let your inner abstract artist go wild and then cut out a heart to mount onto another piece of paper or use a floating frame like I did!
“Coloring Page” Style Materials
- cardstock
- black paint or black marker
- coloring materials such as crayons or colored pencils
1. Draw or paint a large heart on your paper.
2. Allow your child to color it in or color the entire page. While my son, practiced coloring inside the lines, he also drew tiny treasures on the paper for me to find – a tow truck, a mini mommy, and a few hearts. Can you find them??
3. You can choose to cut the heart out and frame, or frame the entire paper. This year’s Valentines masterpiece will certainly be on annual display!
I hope you find some inspiration here! And I hope your Valentine’s Day, and every day, is filled with love and maybe a little sparkle!
