After I shared my DIY tutorial for amber glass ornaments, I received a few messages saying that alcohol inks are another great way to make colored ornaments. I had never heard of such a think so obviously, I had to try them out! I absolutely love this technique! It produced such beautiful rich color and can be used for both glass AND plastic ornaments!
I used a $5 box of 9 glass ornaments from Target for these, so this would make a really beautiful handmade gift that is also incredibly affordable! It’s also a great opportunity to use upcycled glass ornaments from the thrift store!
If you’re wondering which technique I prefer I think it depends on who is making them. If you are crafting with children, I would definitely recommend the mod podge and food coloring technique. Draining the liquid can be messy, but it does not stain! The alcohol inks stained everything they touched so I don’t think I’d enjoy making them with my 7 year old.
what you need
- clear ornaments – either glass or plastic
- alcohol inks in your choice of colors
- compressed air
- optional – spray paint for the ornament caps
- ribbon or ornament hooks
how to make it
After removing the cap from your ornament, add a drop or 2 of ink to the inside neck of your ornament, allowing the ink to run down the sides. Add more colors if desired.
When you have added all of your ink drops, spray compressed air into the ornament. This distributes the ink all over the inside and helps the ink to dry very quickly. Repeat this process if desired for bolder color.
Paint ornament caps if desired and insert onto ornaments once the ink is completely dry.
Hang with desired materials.
