Recently, I decided to remove an old mirror from its frame and discovered how beautiful the frame would be for a DIY Christmas Decoration! The 4 antique wood boards across the back are in beautiful condition and I was inspired to feature them in a simple affordable DIY I have been wanting to do!

This understated yet stunning wall art couldn’t be more simple to put together with just a few materials! Any piece of wood will work and would look gorgeous framed or unframed. Here’s how I made it.

Materials

• wood – if you can use reclaimed wood, pallet, or other upcycled wood – that’s amazing! If you are using a new piece of wood, stores like Home Depot and Lowes will happily cut a piece to your desired size. Feel free to stain it, paint it – let your creativity out!
• craft paper and pencil
• ruler or tape measure
• nails
• hammer
• ribbon in your desired color – I used this
• scissors

How to Make it

1. Sketch out a star on paper and place on top of your chosen wood. To center my star, I measured the distance from the edges of the frame to the 5 star points and made sure they were the same.

2. With your paper in place, hammer a nail lightly through the paper and slightly into the wood, marking where the nails will go.

3. Remove your paper, and hammer the nails into the wood, leaving about 1/2 inch of nail exposed.

4. Take a long piece of ribbon, and beginning at the top point, wrap your ribbon around the nails like you would draw a star until it looks like the image below. Both ends of the ribbon should be at the top point of the star when you are finished.

5. Securely tie the ribbon in a bow and trim the ends.

And that’s it! As your décor style changes you can easily swap out the ribbon color in future years, or try a new shape! I love the gold ribbon with my décor this year, but black or dark red would also look beautiful!

I chose to display my star on my peg shelves layered with other antique pieces – including the mirror I removed from the frame! Adding mirrors, metallics, and greenery to the shelves adds depth and interest rather than a simple collection of family antiques.
