How to Bleach Wicker

Date

I thrifted these 1980’s woven nesting heart baskets for $5 last week and challenged myself to upcycle them for chic Valentine décor this year! I wanted to lighten the wicker/rattan so I decided to bleach them – did you know you could do that?!

How To Bleach Wicker Baskets

1. Place wicker item in a sink or large bucket

2. Fill your sink with water and add 1 Cup Bleach for each Gallon of water used. I used an entire small bottle of bleach and filled the sink with enough water to cover the hearts.

NOTE: If your basket begins to float lay something heavy (and bleach safe) on top to keep it submerged.

3. After soaking for about 30 minutes, drain the liquid thoroughly rinse the wicker.

4. Allow to fully dry outside, preferably in sunshine!

NOTE: You are going to think the process did not work at first because the woven material is wet. But once the hearts were dry, the transformation was pretty dramatic and I love how they look!
