I found an image of a cabbage filled with flowers for an Easter centerpiece years ago and I have always wanted to try it! It feels so Springy and it’s definitely a fun, unique statement piece! It’s also pretty easy to make! You don’t need to be a professional florist for this arrangement – I’m certainly not!

How far in advance can I make this?
I made my arrangement 2 days ago and everything still looks nice and perky today without using any type of floral food. I have added a small amount of COLD water each morning to make sure my tulips are hydrated enough. I would suggest making this the day before your event to ensure perfect blooms. Then you’ll be able to also enjoy your flowers for several days after all the hard work of your event too!
What you need
- a large cabbage
- florals of your choice
- oasis or floral foam
- scissors and sharp knife
How to Make it
Start by cutting the base/stem of your cabbage so that it sits level on the table. This took a few tries for me, so make sure you’re only cutting a very thin sliver off! If you cut too much, your cabbage won’t hold together.
Using a pairing knife, I started cutting a hole in the top, very similarly to how I would cut a pumpkin for a jack-o-lantern. I ended up using that knife along with a serrated knife and a spoon to scrape out some of the cabbage as I got deeper.
The hole I made was about 4 inches in diameter and about 4 inches deep. It only needs to be deep enough to hold a piece of foam where you will stick your flowers, so there’s no need to cut to the bottom.
Once I had my hole cut, I cut a piece of foam to fit inside. I just used floral foam from the dollar tree left over from my hanging floral centerpieces.
I started placing my florals into the foam one type at a time. The tulips have a weaker stem than the mums and eucalyptus I used, so I used a chop stick to make a small hole first and then insert my tulips into those.
I continued adding flowers until I could no longer see the foam and felt like I had a good distribution of flowers.
I added COLD water to the hole/foam until the water was at the top of the cabbage. There was no leaking and my flowers have styed nice several days later!
This arrangement would also be so sweet styled for a baby or bridal shower – or any spring/summer party!
