Our Garage Pantry

Date

Our home doesn’t have a pantry outside of our standard kitchen cabinets, so when we moved in 5 years ago we needed to come up with a solution for how to store shelf stable food items and serve ware without cluttering our kitchen. We chose these shelf systems from the PAX line at Ikea. At the time, they were a budget friendly option that allowed us a ton of customization. In hindsight, I would choose actual cabinetry for a kitchen, which you can find inexpensively on Facebook Marketplace or even at your local Home Depot or Lowes. The PAX systems are deeper than they need to be making it difficult to reach things in the back. Additionally, because the shelves are meant for clothes and not food, we have noticed a slight sag to the shelves. But it’s not severe.

I wanted to start our year off by reorganizing the pantry because it had become a catch all for clutter and was VERY dirty from being part of a garage! We also use our garage for home improvement products so sometimes there’s sawdust in the air, and let’s face it, whose garage is as clean as the inside of their home?

I wanted storage options that would help us better organize food as well as lidded storage for all of our off-season dishes and serve ware. I’m also storing some of our heirloom china on these shelves to keep our dining room from getting too cluttered.

I found these awesome dish storage totes at Honey Can Do that come with a padded case and thick felt to lay between easy dish or bowl. Everything is so secure in these totes! I also grabbed some lidded boxes with adjustable sections to store glassware and other small items in the garage. Having everything boxed up looks SO much better and I know it’s all staying much cleaner!

For our food, I opted for some plastic bins from Walmart to corral large items like cereal boxes and baking items. I also grabbed a can organizer which saves a lot of space! I love these narrow acrylic bins to corral items like rice and sauces.

Our garage isn’t Pinterest worthy by any means, but our new organization is very functional and practical for our family! If your home doesn’t have a pantry, what has been your storage solution?
