When we decided to turn our spare bedroom into a home office, we needed a clever way to host guests. Fortunately, our playroom-turned-parlour has a spacious closet that can easily store a queen-size mattress and platform frame. This way, we can quickly set up a cozy guest bed whenever needed, using the back of the closet as a headboard.

Giving the Closet a Fresh Look
Our playroom’s closet didn’t get much attention during the room’s makeover, but it’s finally getting the upgrade it deserves! To give the space a fresh and inviting feel, we decided to add color and personality.
Adding Color
To turn the closet into a functional guest space, we decided to keep the shelf for storing essentials like bedding, towels, a hanging bar, and a luggage rack. We painted the shelf and cleats in the same deep burgundy as the room’s walls—Dark Auburn by Sherwin Williams.

Adding Pattern
To inject some personality into this small space, we chose a peel-and-stick wallpaper with a botanical pattern in a moody colorway. The wallpaper features beautiful bird illustrations and adds warmth and coziness to the space. Plus, it’s easy to remove or update if we decide to change the style in the future.

Adding the comforts of home
After using the closet guest room for a month during our bedroom makeover, we realized it needed a few more comforts to be truly welcoming. We added stylish nightstands with turned-leg accent tables that fit perfectly inside the closet, even when the mattress is stored.
To enhance the ambiance, we also installed battery-operated light sconces for reading. These sconces are cord-free, remote-controlled, and easily rechargeable via USB!
Finishing Touches
We updated the guest bedding with a beautiful rich blue duvet cover from Brooklinen. The deep color complements the burgundy walls and the bedding itself is incredibly soft and luxurious—so much so that our guests might never want to leave!
